As a lifelong fisherman, these are my recommendations for the Top 10 must-have essentials that every beginning or experienced fisherman should have onboard.

Obviously, you need a great rod and reel, fishing tackle, bait and other essentials, but this list, in no particular order, demonstrates what I consider to be the most essential, must-have items that every angler needs:

  1. Bubba Blade

I never leave home without my Bubba Blade! This kit includes 4 TiN-Coated, High-Carbon, Full Tang Stainless Steel Interchangeable Blades, and the patented Bubba Blade Non-Slip Grip handle ensures reliable use in your hand even when wet. It features safety guards for protection from the blade and spines of fish. The ergonomic trigger & guard with seamless fixed blade performance has a lanyard hole and premium EVA case ideal for small, medium and large size fish.

2. Boga Grip with Scale

The BogaGrip is designed to promote "catch and release fishing," as it will land, handle, and weigh fish quickly and simultaneously without injury to the fish. It is particularly good for handling fish in cold weather, or hard-to-handle fish. The fish's weight is checked by reading the point that the main tube's embossed scale has been pulled down to inside the grip tubing. The fish is released by pulling back on the trigger. In use, the fisherman will hold the grip sleeve, and using his index finger or thumb will pull back the trigger sleeve, which causes the jaws to open.

3. Garmin GPS (Chart Plotter/Sonar/Depth Finder/Weather Radar)

There are many versions and models of the Garmin GPS. I have the Gpsmap 7410Xsv onboard and highly recommend it. Designed for sports fishermen, cruisers, sailors, and sailing racers who demand high performance, the Gpsmap 7410Xsv is fully network capable, including Garmin network and NMEA 2000, and offers the conveniences of built-in Wi-Fi connectivity. Two SD card slots provide expandable memory for accessory map purchases, such as LakeVu HD, lakes HD Ultra or blue chart G2 or blue chart G2 vision. Garmin gWind, gWind wireless and gWind race transducers feature twin-fin technology with 3-bladed propeller.

4. Folding Fish Net

If you want to land the monster fish that just reeled in, you need this waterproof nylon mesh folding fish net with a non-absorbent coating that prevents the net from waterlogging and odor absorption. It’s ultra lightweight and easy to carry and store. The special designed belt clip has the advantage of convenience in carrying and transportation. It's a great gift for any angler. The knotless nylon mesh prevents fishhooks from getting tangled. The net is excellently fish friendly which will not be harmful to fish scales, suitable for sea fishing, river fishing, lake fishing, and boat fishing.

5. Water-Tight Tackle Box

There are many varieties out there, so choose one that has an organization system that works for you—but be sure it’s WATERPROOF and AIR TIGHT! I like this one because it’s functional and high quality. It has seven clever internal and external storage pockets ideal for the avid pro angler or first-time fisherman to have everything close at hand. Store your small fishing tackle like lure boxes, fishing reels, hooks, fish holder, scissors with three outer mesh pockets for quick access. This tackle pack is made of high-density strong ripstop non-absorbent polyester which is tough and durable with an water-resistant inner layer to keep your fishing stuff protected from the elements. Easy access with the internal drawstring water shield, it won’t rust or suffer saltwater corrosion.

6. Finger Nail Clippers

I know this sounds crazy and may not be on every angler’s must-have list, but I don’t go fishing without some good finger nail clippers. They are perfect for quickly cutting fishing line! Try these clippers, or any stainless variety that you already have (stainless is important so it won’t rust in the salty environment).

7. Hat and Sunscreen

When you are on the water, even in cool or overcast temperatures, don’t forget the a good wide-brimmed hat or ball cap and heavy sunscreen to protect you! Be sure to choose sunscreen with a high SPF. Don’t underestimate the power of the sun reflecting off the water!

There are many brands to choose from, but fishing gloves can help hold on to the monster fish you’re trying to pull in, as well as protect you from sharp scales, sharp teeth and sharp hooks. Depending on the weather, you may need a pair that keep you warm in cold conditions. Always choose a waterproof brand.

9. Non-Slip Boots

The Deck Boss Ankle Boot was designed to provide anglers with comfortable performance-driven footwear options that will outlast even the longest days on the water. With a thicker insole to promote noticeable shock resistance and the anti-microbial cooling liner ensures you leave the typical footwear stench behind. Built-in razor siping helps move water out from under the shoe improving grip on wet surfaces and combined with a natural gum rubber outsole, you’ll be standing upright on deck all day long.

10. Fish Measuring Ruler

SeaDek fish rulers offer a permanent and attractive alternative to stickers, tape measures, and other measuring devices. Offered in a 3mm thickness with a brushed texture, these rulers feature laser-etched numbers that will not fade or break down, and utilize peel-and-stick 3MTM pressure sensitive adhesive for easy installation. As well as providing traction underfoot, SeaDek fish rulers provide a non-skid surface for holding slippery fish in place for measurement.
